Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has marvelled at the strides made so far regarding the fight against drugs and substance abuse in parts of the Mt Kenya region.sure exalted on bhang peddlers who have had to inflate their prices owing to the risk posed by law enforcement agents. Inflated bhang prices The deputy president noted that in the event the prices of such substances go up, those consuming them cease to purchase as they cannot afford.
Rigathi divulged that a roll of backstreet bhang that was sold at KSh 100 is currently going at KSh 400. He says this is good progress as it is effortlessly reducing consumption and abuse. “I am so happy that since we started this exercise in the central Kenya region, a roll of bhang that was going at KSh 100 is now going at KSh 400. We are making progress. It is becoming unaffordable, and that is the right thing,” he said. “Because the police are so heavy on them, the sellers see the risk is so high and thus, they have to inflate prices. When they sell at KSh 100, those who afforded at that price stop smoking,” stated the deputy president.
Rigathi spoke on Thursday, May 4, in Naivasha, where he opened a three-day consultative forum on the current state of illicit brew and substance consumption in central Kenya. Attending the forum are MCA’s, Senators, Investigative Agencies, Prosecutors, Legal Drafters, NACADA, KEBS, Anti-Counterfeit Agency and other stakeholders from the counties of Kiambu, Muranga, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga and Nyeri. The consultative forum is expected to come up with uniform laws to guide and bolster the ongoing fight against drugs.
